Harmonia - Live!

From the transcendent sounds of Anonymous 4, to the sublime realm of Chant, to the passion of an Italian Baroque violin sonata, the world of Early Music is drawing new listeners in unprecedented numbers. Harmonia, a weekly 59-minute radio program produced in conjunction with Indiana University's world-renowned Early Music Institute, brings the music of these earlier periods to life for radio audiences, as performers of today cast new light on the music of the distant past.

Harmonia is a production of WFIU in Bloomington, Indiana, home of Indiana University's prestigious School of Music and the largest Early Music Institute in North America; with additional technical support from KOHM at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. Bloomington's position as a center for Early Music research provides fertile ground for concert recordings and interviews with top performers and scholars in the field. Indiana University's Thomas Binkley Archive of Early Music Recordings, an unmatched resource for rare, out-of-print,and historically important Early Music recordings, enriches Harmonia's musical offerings. Combining this unique collection of resources with commercial, private, and archival material, Harmonia host and producer Angela Mariani brings historically informed performance to today's listeners, adding evocative commentary to illustrate, inform, and entertain.

Fresh Air with Terry Gross is a one-hour program of interviews with an often eclectic mix of artists, and experts on current affairs. The program traces connections between individuals and cultures. While you are working in your own cultural sphere, find out - what it was like working with Frank Sinatra and the brat pack - how did an Iranian author work through the system to be a university professor - what forces did a White House speech writer have to deal with every day - how do independent filmmakers get their inspiration and funding. Recent shows have included a Saudi born woman participating in the hajj with her sisters, a writer's memoir about participating in the stock market boom to raise a quick million dollars, the 60's - a rock musician telling what it was like in the sixties, the Mayor of Vancouver discusses the view from Canada, and a former Republican strategist discusses his book about the Bush family.

Film, music, and TV commentary are regular contributions to the show. Fresh Air won the 1994 Peabody Award.

Jazz After Hours - Live on 9/5/10 at 12:00am (ET)!

Jazz After Hours is a late night jazz radio show hosted by Jim Wilke heard Friday and Saturday nights across the U.S. and parts of Canada. Like the last set at a jazz club, the mood is mellow but not without surprises. New and well-established jazz artists regularly drop in for a chat and the music ranges from latest releases to jazz classics. There's also news of tours, festivals and clubs and the best places to hear live jazz.

Jim's easy-going presentation has won the praise of jazz stars Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown, Max Roach, Joe Henderson, Milt Jackson, Joshua Redman, Billy Taylor and many others who have been guests on Jazz After Hours. The program was again named one of the top syndicated jazz programs by the JazzTimes Readers Poll in 2002 and 2003, and Jim was nominated again in 2003 for the Willis Connover/Marian McPartland Award for Lifetime Achievement in Jazz Broadcasting by the Jazz Journalists Association. The show is produced at Hatchcover Productions in Seattle and distributed by Public Radio International to public radio stations from Midnight to 7 a.m. Eastern Time. It reaches an international audience via more than a dozen stations who stream their programs to the internet.

Pulitzer Prize-winning New York Daily News columnist E.R. Shipp writes: ”He does what too little of talk radio or television does these days: conducts civil conversations with a broad spectrum of politicians, newsmakers, performers and writers in a forum where one first has to declare one's political alliances. He's comfortable with conservatives, liberals and the undeclared; with the profound and the profane, with elder statesmen and the hip-hop nation. With such stratification in the country, he provides one place that helps promote dialogues that might not otherwise take place before audiences who might not otherwise think that they have anything in common.”

Innovations - Live on 9/5/10 at 3:30am (ET)!

A showcase of Australian design, discoveries, invention, engineering and research skills...

The aircraft black box flight recorder, the first ice maker and the heart pacemaker... all Australian inventions.

Each week Desley Blanch highlights what's on the drawing boards of Australian inventors and what's just come off the production line.

From concept to conclusion, from an idea to industry, Desley follows the process and focuses on the ingenuity.

Desley Blanch

Desley has developed a niche as Radio Australia's science and technology specialist. This comes after a distinguished career as a television newsreader and magazine presenter. Desley doesn't pretend to be an expert in science, but she does bring to the program an inquiring mind and the view from "the layperson". Her most often asked question is: "How does this work?"

"I see my role as the link between the scientist or developer and ordinary people," says Desley. "I often don't understand the terms scientists use or the technology employed, so I see it as my job to demystify and find out."

Desley places an emphasis on process rather than event, and through that reflects the major themes in innovation in Australia.

When she's not researching the latest innovation, you can find Desley on one of the many golf courses around Melbourne, or at the theatre or the opera.
